This month we will give an overview of the Natural Protected
Spaces of the Canary Islands. The Canary Network of Natural Protected Spaces
consists of 145 areas, which all together make up 40,4% of the canarian territory,
with big differences between islands depending on natural envioronments.
National Parks The National Parks are natural spaces with
small changes by human exploitation or occupation where natural scenery, fauna,
flora and geomorphological formations are representative of their ecosystem, giving
them a great significance to the conservation of ecological, educational and scientific
values, which are from general interest because they represent most of the basic
spanish nature systems. The National Parks of the Canary Islands
are: · National Park of Teide (Tenerife) · National
Park of Garajonay (La Gomera) · National Park of Timanfaya (Lanzarote)
· National Park of La Caldera de Taburiente (La Palma)
Rural Parks Rural Parks are those big space areas, where agricultural,
cattle-raising or even fishing activities coexist with other of natural and ecological
interest, making a nice landscape of great ecocultural interest which needs conservation.
The objectives of such declared parks are to preserve all the area and
at the same time promote in harmonious evolution the local towns making lifestyle
better. The Rural Parks of the Canary Islands are:

Rural Park of Betancuria (Fuerteventura) Natural Parks
Natural Parks are those that remain untouched by humans and are not occupied.
The beauty of the nature, flora, fauna and geology altogether are considered unique
samples of the Canarian heritage. The Natural Parks of the Canary
